Reclamation

In the book and movie, "A Christmas Carol," by Charles Dickens, the Ghost of Christmas Past said to Ebenezer Scrooge, "I've come for your reclamation."

Most of us have been visited by the Ghost of Christmas Past.  She visits us when we say, "I should have..." or "I wish I had..."

The Ghost of Christmas Present shows Ebenezer Scrooge two sets of realities:  abundance and happiness, and, poverty and want.  In showing Mr. Scrooge these pairs of experiences, the spirit reminds Ebenezer that experiences can be chosen.

Also in this same book and movie, at his own grave side, Ebenezer Scrooge is in tears and terrified at the prospect of his own death.  He is horrified that there is no one to mourn him and nothing but "greed and avarice" surround his demise.

Now, sickened by the cruelty of others over his passing but his mind still sharp, Ebenezer Scrooge realizes that things yet to come will have different outcomes depending on what is done in the present.  He also understands that the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come has "pity for me and intercedes."  Taking in a deep breath of air, Ebenezer Scrooge vows to "honor Christmas with all my heart and keep it through out the year."  And clasping his hands in prayer-like pose, Mr. Scrooge vows that "all three spirits will strive within me.  I will not shut out the lessons that they teach."

And, as the story goes, Ebenezer Scrooge kept his word and became "as good a man as many have ever seen."  In approximately three hours, his reclamation was complete.  He reclaimed the goodness and charity he was born with then shared the wealth he had worked long and hard to acquire.

You probably don't need the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come to scare the livin' daylights out of you, your own sorrows, fears or frustrations can do that.  With a new year already here and the recent visitation of these same three spirits, I ask you, what do you want to reclaim?

Have a self-empowering, happy new year!  Miss Dee
